The XX Anniversary International Environmental Forum “Baltic Sea Day”(BSD 2019) looked back on 20 years of its existence, notably celebrating HELCOM-supported achievements towards improving the environment of the Baltic Sea during that period. For this special 20th anniversary edition of the Baltic Sea Day Forum, particular attention was given to the HELCOM-supported initiatives that have been realized within the twenty years of the Forum’s existence.

Improved management of industrial waste waters in the Baltic Sea Region with focus on Russia
The seminar focused on the management of industrial waste waters in Russia by discussing legislation and its practical implementation. The seminar also highlighted bottlenecks as well as good examples of solutions and cooperation practices among municipal waste water treatment plants and the industry. The participants represented several WWTPs from the Leningrad oblast and Kaliningrad region, Russian national environmental authorities, industries and sectoral agencies from Kaliningrad region, HELCOM, City of Helsinki and John Nurminen Foundation.
Peteris Gailitis and Marjukka Porvari from John Nurminen Foundation moderated the event and the audience heard interesting presentations about industrial wastewater related legislation and its implementation in Russia from both waste water treatment plant and industry point of view. The panel discussion tackled the issue of local cooperation, seeking challenges and good practices for industrial wastewater management in Russia. The debaters represented WWTPs, industry, environmental authorities, and sectoral agencies.
